We recently had the privilege of attending the ZNA Carolina Koi Show in Raleigh, North Carolina — one of the premier koi competitions on the East Coast. Koi shows across the United States have grown in quality and prestige every year, and this event was no exception. Whether you're a seasoned hobbyist or just starting your koi journey, understanding how judging works can deepen your appreciation for these magnificent fish.
Class A vs. Class B: What's the Difference?
Every koi entered in a show is placed into one of two broad classes:
Class A — Gosanke
Class A is reserved for the Gosanke and Utsuri varieties — the "Big Three" of the Gosanke koi world: Kohaku, Showa, and Sanke. These are the iconic red, white, and black fish that have long defined the pinnacle of koi keeping. Gosanke fish compete for the most prestigious awards, including Best in Show. Utsuri koi are comprised of: Shiro, Hi, and Ki.
Class B — Kawari
Class B, known as Kawari, encompasses all varieties that fall outside the Gosanke class. This includes a stunning range of koi — from metallic Ogon to the dramatic Ochiba — giving every variety its moment in the spotlight.
Size Classes: 1 Through 9
Within each class, koi are judged against fish of similar size. Sizes are numbered 1 through 9, with Size 9 representing the largest standard competitors including the one-meter giants.
This size-based structure ensures fair competition: a 10-inch koi isn't pitted against a 36-inch champion. Every fish has a genuine shot at recognition within its own size bracket.
Awards and Champion Titles
The judging system rewards excellence at multiple levels:
- Best in Variety
- Best in Size
- Baby Champion
- Young Champion
- Adult Champion
- Mature Champion
- Superior Champion
- Majestic Champion
- Grand Champion
Accessible to Every Koi Keeper
One of the most exciting aspects of koi shows is how inclusive the format is. Whether your koi is 10 inches or a full meter long, there's a class and a size bracket where it can compete — and win. You don't need a pond full of grand champions to participate. You just need a love of koi and the willingness to show up.
If you've never attended a koi show, we highly encourage you to experience one. It's a celebration of the art, science, and passion behind koi keeping — and a reminder of why we do what we do.
