Yellow Dragon Koi: Aokiya's Rarest Tosai Now at Aqua Fauna Ponds

We are thrilled to introduce one of the most extraordinary groups of koi we've ever had the privilege of offering — Yellow Dragon Koi from Aokiya Koi Farm, one of Japan's most celebrated and distinctive koi breeders.

What Are Yellow Dragon Koi?

Yellow Dragon Koi are a breathtaking variety defined by their vivid all-yellow coloration and striking aragoke (armored) scaling. Aragoke scaling features large, raised plate-like scales that give these fish the appearance of an ancient dragon — hence the name. These fish are typically a doitsu (partially scaleless) variety, meaning the dramatic armor plates appear against otherwise smooth skin, creating a bold, prehistoric aesthetic unlike any other koi.

Why Aokiya Koi Farm?

Aokiya Koi Farm has earned a reputation throughout Japan for producing the weird and wonderful — boundary-pushing varieties that stand apart from conventional koi breeding. Their tosai (first-year koi) are consistently high quality, and this group is no exception. We consider Aokiya one of our absolute favorite breeders, and sourcing this collection was a rare opportunity we couldn't pass up.

Every Fish Is One of a Kind

One of the most remarkable things about Yellow Dragon Koi is that no two are alike. Unlike standard metallic yellow koi, which can look nearly identical, each Yellow Dragon is completely unique — like a fingerprint. You'll find:

  • Fish with a single zipper-line of aragoke scaling along the spine, reminiscent of Shusui
  • Fish fully covered in dense, armored aragoke plating — the true "best of the best"
  • Everything in between, with stunning mixed patterns that make each fish a living work of art
